Pattaya, Thailand, is already known as one of those exotic places built for Westerner tourists who are eager to become half-time expats. One of those places where inhibitions are low, and pretty much everything goes. But, after the resort city has earned out this reputation, some of the city's property developers and tourism-related service suppliers are determined to work at enlarging it.
Today Pattaya strives to rebrand itself through an all-inclusive attitude of its property developers. From a place where everything goes, to the place where all conceivable lifestyles can be pursued with success. Crowding, meditation, go-go bars, watersports, third age retreats, golf courts, shopping sessions, quality education for your children - you name it and Pattaya would offer it. Service suppliers insist that all the world's traditions mingle here in the most peaceful way. Obviously, go-go bars cannot exist on the same streets with schools and hospitals. But developers realized they have a lot to gain if not all the expats they cater to are third age singles or young bachelors having endless fun.
People who want to do business here in Pattaya need to be encouraged, but business has more conventional aspects. People who want to spend quality time with their families need to be encouraged, but that means encouraging a healthy lifestyle. The developers' momentary answer to these problems is building massive resorts with inner courtyards where all sort of amenities is present. These amenities are styled and fashioned to support reclusive, formal or health-related activities, as well as all day long aquatic distractions for children. Some examples should convince you. The Zire Wongamat twin towers are being built to support different needs equally, those of businessmen being included; the Sanctuary Wongamat has managed to be a luxury beachfront hideaway in the middle of a noisy area; the Atlantis and the Amazon, both in Jomtien, will be ideal for water-loving families with children. As for families living here, foreign schools are already in town. The Pattaya City Resort, a gradual project occupying a large area in Western Pattaya, is a good choice for an inner city Pattaya family home, with its completely controlled environment including its own shopping area.
Pattaya City cannot avoid its inner conflicts for now. It still is far from what a naturally developing urban area would offer. It still is an artificially built place where affordable hotels, condo buildings, bars and shows for people willing to spend on leisure are jammed. But "affordability", the sacred, miracle word that gave birth to Pattaya resort area is likely to operate further changes. Now, the affordability of leisure is gradually turning into the affordability of living here in general. Since the resort was born, record numbers of expats keep coming back, before finally deciding to live here, at least several months every year. For now, Pattaya's success as a touristic destination is combining with the overall local offer, and that will further urbanize the resort.
